I Am From

 

 

I am from upstanding families, Mormons to the left and Catholics to the right,

I am from Sunday school and Wednesday Night Bible study

I am from my mother’s hardened gaze

      that saw the depths of my  hellish soul.

 

 

I am from Cheerios, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly,

I am from 2% milk and iced tea.

I am from I Love Lucy and The Flintstones,

      sips of Coors Light and puffs of Pall Malls.

 

 

I am from hide and go seek, spiders and flies,

I am from 18 inch swimming pools folded up each evening.

I am from in before sundown and out at sunbreak.

I am from catching butterflies in the field

      feeding spiders in the yards.

 

 

I am from the orphanage and the adoption courts, oldest girl, middle child,

I amd from good grades, outstanding citizenship, homecoming courts and academic clubs,

I am from eager to please, but never good enough.
